The Manchester Guardian supplement, 3 October 1926; Manchester Civic Week - cover advert for the Port of Manchester

A rather fine advert for the Port of Manchester by ‘Dugdale’ that graces the front cover of the Manchester Guardian’s Manchester Civic Week supplement for October 1926. It shows the Ship Canal that changed Manchester from a landlocked city into one of the UK’s most important ports until effective closure (as a customs port) in 1982.

Since that date the Docks (largely in neighboring Salford) have been redeveloped as the Quays. The Manchester Guardian dropped the city of its birth’s name off its masthead in 1959.
