FRAUD ALERT: Gift Card Buying Scam

This is a quick gift card fraud alert reminding you that anytime someone asks you to buy gift cards and send them the numbers…it’s probably a scam.

The story usually goes something like this. We need help paying the rent, I am stuck in jail, your granddaughter is in jail, or the IRS is coming to get you…but you can avoid all of that if you just make payment with cards.

Because gift cards are a financial instrument, scammers use them to launder money. But they need someone to buy the gift cards in the first place. So they look for ways to trick people into buying gift cards and giving them the gift card numbers, so they can drain the value of the cards without you knowing it.

This is a scam because NO REPUTABLE BUSINESS OR GOVERNMENT AGENCY would ever ask for payment with gift cards. Why would they? What would the IRS do with gaming gift cards? What would the police department do with Amazon gift cards? What would your cable company buy with a music gift card? LEGIT COMPANIES require payment with cash, check or credit card. Not gift cards.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? If you get a text or email or phone call like this…just hang up, block the phone number, delete the email or block the text. It’s not legitimate. And if you want to be sure, contact the person in need directly or call a trusted friend. You can also contact the police or the FTC if you’re being harassed.

IF YOU THINK YOU’RE THE VICTIM OF A GIFT CARD SCAM: Contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at their website: https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/ or call the toll free number at 1-877-FTC-HELP.

If you any any other questions on gift card scams, leave a comment below.

Happy Gift Carding and thanks for watching.

FRAUD ALERT: "Special Offer" Gift Card Scam

Here’s a quick gift card fraud alert warning you about scammers who call, text, or email with “special offers” if you pay with gift cards. The offer goes something like this. A scammer contacts you and offers you a discount on your cable TV service, your phone bill, etc. You might get a text telling you that there’s a virus on your computer and you get can it removed if you buy this special software. The stories are endless, but in almost all cases, you’ll be instructed to make payment with a gift card.

THAT’S A SCAM. No government agency or reputable business will ever ask for payment with gift cards. Why would they? Why would your cable company want gift cards? Why would your cable company want ANOTHER brand’s gift cards?

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? If you get an offer like this, just hang up, block the phone number, delete the email or block the text. It’s not legitimate. And if you’re not sure, then call the company yourself. Don’t take the phone number from the scammer…look it up for yourself and call directly. Then you’ll know for sure that you’re being scammed.

IF YOU THINK YOU’RE THE VICTIM OF A GIFT CARD SCAM: Contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at their website: https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/ or call the toll free number at 1-877-FTC-HELP.

How to Find OFFICIAL Gift Card Activation Websites

When you get a gift card that needs to be activated, the most important thing to do is activate it on the correct website. I realize that seems like pretty basic advice, but what used to be time-saving tip has turned into a critical information. Here’s why.

Scammers create fake gift card activation websites that look very close to the real thing to trick consumers into entering their card information. Once the card information is obtained, scammers can drain the value of the gift cards without consumers knowing.

BUT THE SOLUTION IS EASY.

TO AVOID THIS SCAM: Simply activate your gift card using the telephone number or the website address listed on your card. It will most likely be written on the back of the card or a sticker across the front. When you get to the site, check the URL in the address bar to ensure it matches the one on your card. Don’t do a search and you’ll be fine.

Once you get to the website, double check that the URL in your browser’s address bar matches the URL listed on the card. If you’re not comfortable doing that, call the phone number listed on the card instead of scan the QR code if you can find one.

IF YOU THINK YOU’RE THE VICTIM OF A GIFT CARD SCAM: Contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at their website: https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/ or call the toll free number at 1-877-FTC-HELP.
