Gonna throw it out there that inviting politicians to these kinds of events is just not a good idea in general.

> Lummis also issued a statement apologizing. While she lied during her speech and said that her comment had nothing to do with transgender people, she was willing to admit in her statement that she was in fact talking about transgender people, but “it was never my intention to make anyone feel un-welcomed or disrespected, and for that I apologize.”

If it wasn’t, why even bring it up? Oh, because it was.

“Students booed and Lummis was clearly rattled by the unexpected reaction she got.”

I’d say these people need to get out more, but if they had done that in the first place, they might not be republicans to begin with.

“Commencement is supposed to honor the hard work and achievements of students, and speeches from distinguished people are supposed to impart wisdom to the next generation as they move on to the next phase of their lives.”

Yeah, be careful of the manner in which they’re ’distinguished.’

>“Even fundamental, scientific truths such as the existence of two sexes, male and female, are subject to challenge these days,” Lummis said during her speech at the University of Wyoming during graduation this past Saturday. Students booed and Lummis was clearly rattled by the unexpected reaction she got.

>“You know I…. And I challenge those of you-” she said before trying to explain away her previous statement: “I’m not making a comment on the fact that there are people who transition between sexes.” She got more boos.

She was rattled by the boos and instantly tried to backtrack her bigotry. What a weak and cowardly human being

These miserable fuckers can’t string two sentences together without reverting to some meaningless red-meat talking point. She must have thought she was at a MAGA rally.

Graduation is a time when families and students celebrate their achievement. What place is that for flogging a political wedge issue? Clueless or classless or both.

Some lyrics from a song from her generation:

“Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
The battle outside ragin’
Will soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’”

“How could we allow individuals from not attending worship services while labeling liquor stores “essential businesses””

Well jeez Karen, because it’s a fucking store and not an event hall? We can debate about logistics for the stores, but if we label grocery stores as essential business, then that applies to the same type of stores. But it’s an in and out item for grocery shopping. It’s not a fucking event hall where everyone is yelling hallelujah as loud as they can to feel better about the trashiness the other 6 days of the week. Your attack on liquor stores clearly is you seeing it as a sin, so should the Government have come in and banned all liquor sales?

Learn to critically think about your mindset and how it can logically be applied in very bad situations; basically the leopards ate* my face system

What was her campaign manager thinking, to allow her to take the speaker’s lectern in front of the graduating class of a non-sectarian university. These are educated, highly aware and intensely reflective individuals she was speaking to.

Aside from the anti-trans comment, the rest of the speech sounds awful as well. Why would someone whine about COVID-19 restrictions in a commencement speech? I guess having some decorum and class aren’t requirements for her public office.

As a biology teacher. I understand there are biological differences between sexes- or those with XX and XY chromosomes which make up the majority of humans.

And? Those differences do not affect academic achievement. So why is it a focus during a commencement speech? Because she had to get in her anti Trans bullshit?

and that’s why the GOP hates education.

The more education we have, the more we understand the world around us (or we should)

I dont understand what goes on in a trans person’s mind, lives, and all of it is confusing as hell to me. But strangely enough, never have I ever had a moment where I felt the need to belittle them, act like they arent people, or treat them any differently than anyone else. Crazy right?

It’s almost like we can just let people live their lives and try to make sure everyone has equal rights. What a crazy thought

A sea of well educated individuals is perhaps not the best audience to deliver your latest attack on progression and inclusion.

She wasn’t giving a commencement speech, she was giving a campaign speech. Conservatives are the fucking worst.

The right: why is the left so obsessed with gender and race and always bringing it up

Also the right: *brings up gender during a commencement speech*

Giving a commencement speech should include things like:

-a cute anecdote from when Speaker was in school/their own graduation

-“you young people have so many challenges ahead do you, you’re going to change the world”

-“you’ve worked so hard to get to this place and you can always look back on this when you need encouragement”

Nobody wants to listen to your political screed at their commencement lmao, this day isn’t about you

I live in WY. She’s a complete embarrassment. I feel for all those students who just worked their asses off, went into serious debt only to involuntarily be in her political ad. Disgusting

I’m actually incredibly scared for all trans people the next several months, even more so than normal.

We all know the Republican Party stands for nothing that benefits the average American. They need to create and play up culture wars and wedge issues to get any votes.

It seems pretty clear that Republican strategists have made made attacking trans rights one of their main plans for getting votes this fall. CRT being the other obvious boogeyman they were going to use to scare their voting base in order to get them to the polls.

With the tragedy in Buffalo I fear they might shift away from CRT for the time being and go all out on their already aggressive campaign against trans people.

It breaks my heart in so many ways, and our society needs to find a way to hold those accountable who sow these seeds of hate and violence.
