Not too long ago, an Australian politician was crucified by the mainstream media for not figuring out the inflation charge off the leading of his head. When an additional politician was asked a related concern, this was his response.

In the age of information, when a 5 year old kid can just command their Alexa or whatever to fetch any statistic that is well documented, I see no fucking point in wasting your time and mental capacity having such details ready to throw out at all times.

It takes exactly the same amount of time to find out how many points Michael Jordan scored on average in the 1992 season.

Information is always readily available now. It’s not a game show. Do you think Who Wants To Be A Millionaire would be hard to win if contestants were allowed a smartphone with internet access?

I made an error in the title, it wasn’t the inflation rate that the other politician got wrong, it was the unemployment rate

There is a deeper story here.

A few weeks ago the Australian Prime Minister was asked the price of a loaf of bread. He didn’t know, potentially showing he was out of touch with everyday Aussies.

The politician being vilified for not knowing the unemployment rate or the current cash rate (it was two stat’s he didn’t know) is the opposition leader and this occurred on day 1 of the election.

This is now being framed to minimise the Prime Minister’s earlier gaffe, and to try and cast doubt on the Opposition Leaders ability to do the job of the leader of this country.

Adam bandt is an amazing intelligent leader of the only party with principals and.real.ideas for the future . And as a side not last 3 elections the greens recieved 1.5 million votes compared to 4 for labour and liberal yet 1 lower house seat compared to 100 plus rigged

Sadly a ton of politicians fall for these questions. Elizabeth Warren asked a potential cabinet member a literal math question to calculate a specific APR, and then acted like the person wasn’t qualified because they couldn’t do it in their head. Sadly I can’t find the clip where she asked the question, but it was posted on reddit and a ton of redditors also acted like the person should be able to do it in their head. This also reminds me of when Gary Johnson was asked about Aleppo and people acted like he was an idiot for not knowing what it was.

To that though, should they have to have vision?

At this point I just want a government the Work a day Wally, the quieter achiever that just does the thing but gets no recognition.

I don’t want vision or extravagance, I just want direction and substance.

It’s just Murdoch propoganda trying to keep the favoured party in power. We all know what that’s like.

I think my favorite part of this is that he clearly knew the number, he just wanted to get his thoughts on the subject out there. He rattles the number off near the end.

He got his point across and he proves he knows it offhand to anyone with a keen ear, for a small party the Greens seem to be doing well.

I’m getting private school educated, liberal party supporter, law/*journalism” double degree, everythingisboughtwithdaddysmoney vibes from that so called “journalist”.

This politician is making way too much sense. I need a smear campaign running on him stat. Also sprinkle some crack on him and let’s get out of here.

My takeaway from this was:

*Dental and Mental into medicare*

I heard that and then I cried some ~~freedom flavoured~~ tears.

Amazing response! I’m impressed at how he was able to turn that into a succinct stump speech rather than stooping down to the level of the question

100% this guy did BP debate in university

Googling it and it turns out he went to Monash (a university that’s pretty well known in the international debate circuit) for postgrad and did law. So yeah, he probably dabbled in debate

It was the Opposition Leader who couldn’t state the figures off the top of his head.

It’s been a beat up by the Murdoch press because the Prime Minister, the leader of the party the Murdoch press supports, doesn’t know fuck about anything at any time. He even admitted that he didn’t know that rape and sexual assault was wrong until his wife told him to imagine it happening to his daughters.

But not knowing today’s unemployment numbers apparently makes you unfit to govern.

I went to high school with Adam Bandt. I’m sorry to say, he was a complete dick to me.

That said, I’ve been continually impressed with his political stances and would vote Green if I still lived in Australia.

You can always tell someone’s a hack going for cheap points when they have an 8 sentence multipart question and try to interrupt if you don’t answer with a simple one word answer they can spin

1.) Making the questioner look like a smarmy shill looking for low hanging gotchas: Successful

2.) Keeping the dialogue about actually helping people: Successful
