Huge deal, there are only three Slava class ships. That’s a huge chunk of their black sea firepower and anti-air.

If you follow the link in the tweet, you get a press release from TASS that translates to:

>MOSCOW, 14 April. /TASS/. The cruiser “Moskva” of the Black Sea Fleet was seriously damaged as a result of the detonation of ammunition that occurred as a result of a fire, the crew was evacuated. This was reported in the Russian Defense Ministry.
>”As a result of a fire, ammunition detonated on the Moskva missile cruiser. The ship was seriously damaged. The crew was completely evacuated,” the military department said.
>The ministry said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

No mention of a couple of Neptune anti-ship missiles, courtesy of Ukraine, that may have something to do with it.

Wait, Russia actually admitted to it’s destruction and didn’t say the crew was just conducting special fire drill operations?

Crew of almost 500, with 16 missiles + a whole lot of SAM that hasn’t been fired

“Complete Evacuation” means they scraped half the crew off the walls with a spoon

I think for once they said the truth – some ammunition exploded. They just forgot to mention it being some they did not carry seconds before the explosion

Noway Russia could immediately “evacuate” around 600 crew in a middle of a storm with raging fire and ammunition detonating all over.

They are all dead now.

This will not be easy to hide from the Russian people even with the draconian censorship.

“Crew completely evacuated” so abandoned ship then.

So I doubt they would have put out the fire and then left so it might still be burning out if control now.

It sounds like it’s pretty fucked.

By completely evacuated they mean shredded to small pieces and ejected from the ship by the explosion and are now serving as shark bait ..

I love it. Either their missile defenses didn’t work, or their crew is incompetent enough to start a fire that sets off a magazine. Either is gold.

Two things that don’t go together: (1) The ammunition storage was detonated and (2) The entire crew was evacuated

russian officials claim that two enemy neptune missiles were captured and placed in temporary storage on the moskva missile cruiser. due to improper storage, the missiles exploded, causing a fire. crew members bravely fought the fire by jumping off the ship to splash it with water. fortunately, the ship sank and extinguished the fire.

I can’t read or speak Russian but here’s my translation:

“In a glorious show of bravery, loyalty and selfless commitment, the crew of the Moskva valiantly sacrificed their vessel to rescue orphans, amputees and kittens from the evil clutches of the Ukrainian Nazis.

Rather than risk civilian casualties, these highly specialized and trained humanitarians positioned their ship of peace between the barbarians and their defenseless human targets. Knowing the Russian military sets the global standard with indestructible equipment, they fearlessly prevented the ensuing genocide with their impeccable knowledge of maritime navigation and husbandry.

Unfortunately, it is believed our generosity as a leader in global peace and trade was compromised by having a Western sourced radio on board that was used to plead with the unreasonable tyrannical separatists. Because that radio was not made with high quality and precision Russian materials, it predictably failed under the pressure of uncompromising demand and created a fire of which a novice observer might describe as similar to an anti-ship weapon.

Realizing the smoke would draw the attraction of the sinister West, the crew scuttled the ship to prevent the aggressors from escalating the rescue of millions of abused orphans, amputees and kittens into World War III. Witnesses say the crew purposely placed munitions next to the conflagration to ensure no recovery by the enemy who thirsts for our extremely advanced technology. This may have been the source of a secondary explosion that a novice observer might describe as similar to the impact and detonation of a UK anti-ship weapon.

President Putin said the wisdom and bravery by the Moskva captain was similar to when Captain Francesco Schettino unsuccessfully tried to rescue an entire population falsely imprisoned on Giglio Island in the Tyrrhenian Sea by the West. An event repeatedly repudiated by the West of course as an “accidental collision with a rock”. Our benevolent and glorious leader also added he will personally serve tea to the officers of the Moskva to praise their representation of the Russian Federation and wish them a long retirement from their duty.”
